Taliban bans chess in Afghanistan, calls it 'haram'
The Taliban has prohibited chess in Afghanistan. The ministry of promotion of virtue and prevention of vice claims chess is forbidden under their Islamic law interpretation. The Afghanistan Chess Federation is dissolved. Sports ministry officials confirm the suspension of chess activities. This ban adds to increasing restrictions on cultural and sporting events since 2021. Afghan chess players' appeals to continue playing were rejected.
